The World Humanoid Robot Games gave us a summer of robots that box, dance and outrun Usain Bolt. This week the sequel arrived, and it is far less playful: procurement records, factory order books, and a supply-chain chokepoint most buyers have never priced in.

The through-line is that humanoids are leaving the demo stage and running straight into the unglamorous parts of any industry, defense doctrine, plant conformity, uptime and raw materials. Here is what an operator needs from the week in under a minute.

### China Is Moving Humanoids From the Arena to the Battlefield

Breakdown:

Two days after the Beijing games ended, the PLA Daily urged researchers to speed cutting-edge robotics from the lab to military training grounds for robotic "combatants."

A 2025 paper from the National University of Defense Technology modeled six "combat robots" split across two assault teams to clear a building room by room, using equipment the authors expected within five to 10 years.

In June, the PLA budgeted about $300,000 for a system to collect and label camera, radar and motion data for humanoids, extending its interest from robot bodies into perception and training.

Norinco, a state-owned defense group, is marketing its full-size Fuxi humanoid for sentry duty and all-weather patrol, paired with a teleoperation system so a human keeps control.

**Takeaway:** No armed humanoid has actually joined an operational unit, and the machines stay energy-hungry and unreliable outside staged demos, so this is a research signal, not a fielded capability. The harder implication is upstream: the same Chinese industry that ships most of the world's humanoids is the one the PLA can tap, which means anyone sourcing humanoid hardware is now buying into a dual-use, geopolitically exposed supply base.

### Europe's Newest Robot Unicorn Is Betting on Partners, Not Legs

**Snapshot:** London-based Humanoid says it has [booked more than 34,000 non-binding pre-orders](https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2026/09/08/34000-pre-orders-24-billion-pipeline-inside-europes-newest-humanoid-robot-unicorn/?ref=news.theresarobotforthat.com) worth a roughly $2.4 billion commercial pipeline, two years after founding and on about $270 million in total funding.

Breakdown:

The round included a $152 million Series A at a $1.35 billion valuation, which the company calls Europe's largest humanoid-first Series A.

Its lead product is a wheeled two-armed robot, the HMND 01, pitched as covering roughly 90% of industrial use cases without the cost and failure modes of walking.

Bosch is the contract manufacturer for Europe and Schaeffler is at once an investor, a committed actuator supplier and the largest named customer, targeting a four-digit robot deployment across its plants by 2032.

Humanoid has run pilots with Siemens, SAP and Ford, and says its reinforcement-learning stack already runs some tasks at about 1.5 times human speed with success rates up to 99%.

**Takeaway:** The pre-orders are explicitly non-binding, so the number to watch is not the pipeline but the conversion from pilot to multi-site fleet, the exact gap the CEO admits is the industry's hardest step. The genuinely different bet is the operating model: by handing manufacturing to Bosch and actuator supply to Schaeffler, Humanoid is trying to scale on other people's factories, which lowers its capital needs but ties its destiny to partners it does not control.

The EU Machinery Regulation replaces the old Machinery Directive as the mandatory regime for machines put on the EU market, and a mobile two-armed robot working next to people sits squarely inside its scope. Any operator planning a European deployment should already be mapping which conformity route and documentation the new rules demand.

Breakdown:

The van carries key spare parts, diagnostic gear and repair tools, with an engineer on board, and the company describes it as the first of its kind in Japan.

It starts with a single vehicle in central Tokyo, targeting a one-to-two-hour response time from GMO's Shibuya research hub, with regional bases planned later.

For now it serves only robots that GMO itself has deployed, and the company is running it as in-house infrastructure to build up maintenance know-how.

GMO frames it alongside two other services, one that feeds field data back to improve the robots and one that monitors their networks for unauthorized access.

**Takeaway:** As humanoids reach factories and stores, the binding constraint stops being what a robot can do and becomes how fast it gets back to work after it fails. Whoever owns the maintenance and replacement layer captures the recurring revenue that outlasts the hardware sale, so operators evaluating fleets should treat mean-time-to-repair and a spare-swap plan as line items, not afterthoughts.

Production forecasts diverge wildly, from Goldman Sachs's bear case of about 700,000 robots a year by 2035 to a Bank of America Institute projection of 10 million a year.

Each humanoid needs roughly 2 to 4.5 kilograms of neodymium-iron-boron magnet, and the heat-resistant grades rely on dysprosium and terbium, both under Chinese export control.

At 10 million robots a year the sector would draw about 12% of today's heavy rare-earth supply, versus only about 1.7% at Goldman's 1.4 million base case, so the squeeze bites only in the most aggressive scenarios.

Escape routes exist, from ferrite magnets that need motors about 30% heavier, to magnet-free designs and higher gear ratios, but none of them removes the dependence on China entirely.

**Takeaway:** The scarce input is not compute or clever software, it is a mined and refined material with one dominant supplier, which turns fleet planning into a procurement-risk exercise. An operator signing a multi-year humanoid deal should ask where the actuator magnets come from and whether a second source exists, the same due diligence the auto industry learned the hard way.

Add two lines to your next humanoid RFP. Ask each vendor to name the country of origin of the rare-earth magnets in its actuators and its qualified second source, and ask which EU Machinery Regulation conformity route the robot will be certified under before it goes on your floor. Both answers belong in the contract, not in a post-purchase surprise.
