Boston Dynamics hands its top job to an AI builder

Mecka's $60M for robot training data, Korean warehouse humanoids, a Volkswagen line in China, and six more.

Boston Dynamics hands its top job to an AI builder

The Big Number

Mecka AI raised $60 million this week to turn recordings of people doing everyday chores into the training data that humanoid robots learn from.

Welcome back to your Robot Briefing

The theme this week is not a new robot. It is who runs the companies building them and where the money is landing. Boston Dynamics put an AI product veteran in the top chair, and a young data startup pulled in 60 million dollars to teach robots how people move.

Underneath the headlines, humanoids kept walking onto real floors, from Korean fulfillment centers to a Volkswagen joint venture in China. That is where the questions stop being about demos and start being about operations.

The 60-Second Read

Boston Dynamics named ex-Amazon Alexa chief Rohit Prasad as CEO, a sign its next fight is software, not hardware.
Mecka AI raised 60 million dollars led by Sequoia to turn human motion into robot training data.
Lotte Global Logistics won a five-year project to put a homegrown humanoid through six warehouse processes.
UBTECH will test humanoids on FAW-Volkswagen lines, the latest carmaker to buy in before anyone else.

Boston Dynamics puts the man who built Alexa in charge

Snapshot: Boston Dynamics named Rohit Prasad, the Amazon executive who scaled Alexa and created the Amazon Nova model family, as its chief executive, effective October 7.

Breakdown:

Prasad spent 12 years at Amazon as senior vice president and head scientist for Alexa and artificial general intelligence, and before that nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies leading machine-learning research for government and commercial use.
He takes over as the Hyundai-owned company pushes its electric Atlas humanoid from development toward real work, alongside the Spot quadruped and the Stretch box-mover already deployed with customers.
Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang, who chairs the Boston Dynamics board, framed the hire around turning AI into products at scale across the group's manufacturing and logistics network, and said Prasad is expected to join the board.

Takeaway: A company famous for hardware handing the top job to an AI product executive says the bottleneck has moved from mobility to software and commercialization. Operators weighing Atlas should press on the model stack and the deployment roadmap, not just the demo reel.

Mecka raises $60M to teach robots how people move

Bar chart comparing robot training data startup valuations, highlighting rival XDOF at 1.2 billion dollars and Mecka AI at 500 million dollars following its 60 million dollar Series B raise.

Image Source: There's A Robot For That

Snapshot: Mecka AI raised a $60 million Series B led by Sequoia to turn recordings of ordinary tasks into training data for humanoid and other robots.

Breakdown:

Nvidia and Microsoft's M12 fund joined the round. The startup, founded in 2024, pays people to record themselves doing chores like making coffee or fixing cars while wearing body sensors and using smartphones.
TechCrunch had reported the company was nearing the raise at a roughly $500 million valuation, though Mecka did not disclose a post-money figure for this round.
The bet mirrors what Scale AI did for language models, supplying the human-generated data the systems learn from. Rival XDOF was reported in talks for its own Series B at a $1.2 billion valuation.

Takeaway: The capital is flowing to the data layer as much as to the robots. For operators the practical read is that general-purpose manipulation still hinges on who owns the demonstration data, and that is where the next form of lock-in is quietly building.

⏱️ The Compliance Clock

As humanoids move from staged demos onto real factory and warehouse floors this week, the rulebook that governs them is ISO 10218, the safety baseline for industrial robots and the systems they run in, refreshed in its 2025 revision. It raises the bar on risk assessment, documentation, and how a robot system proves it is safe to work near people. An operator running a humanoid pilot should treat conformity to ISO 10218 as a contract line item, not an afterthought once the robot is already on site.

Lotte wins a five-year bet on Korean warehouse humanoids

Snapshot: Lotte Global Logistics won a five-year national project to build and pilot a homegrown physical-AI humanoid for Korean warehouses.

Breakdown:

The pilots run through 2031 across major centers in Jincheon, Yangsan, and Icheon, testing six processes including 3D sorter operation, goods-to-person picking, consolidation and packing, and repair-parts inspection.
The goal is a Korean-made AI model that reduces reliance on foreign robots and software. Partners include Yujin Robot, CISO, and the Korea Electronics Technology Institute, with Lotte Himart joining as the demand-side customer.
Last year the company piloted a single apparel-to-polybag task with a bipedal humanoid at its Jincheon center. This project extends the robot to a continuous chain of tasks, from order confirmation to packing, with exception handling along the way.

Takeaway: The meaningful shift is from single-task demos to linked workflows. Whether a humanoid can carry a full sequence rather than one tidy motion is the real test of whether it earns a spot on a logistics floor instead of a trade-show stage.

A Volkswagen venture becomes the next humanoid test bed

Snapshot: UBTECH partnered with FAW-Volkswagen to develop and test humanoid robots for logistics and smart manufacturing inside the automaker's Chinese plants.

Breakdown:

FAW-Volkswagen runs five production bases in China and builds 35 Volkswagen, Audi, and JETTA models, so the pilot targets the flexible, varied tasks that fixed automation handles poorly as configurations multiply.
UBTECH says its industrial humanoid platform combines an embodied-intelligence "brain," a motion-control "cerebellum," robot hardware, and swarm coordination, with foundation, world, and action models in the software stack.
The company says its humanoid factory, designed for production at a 10,000-unit scale, has begun operating, with several product lines slated to ramp in the second half of 2026.

Takeaway: Automakers keep showing up first among humanoid buyers because they already run structured lines and have the volume to justify the integration cost. The open question for other sectors is whether their work is repeatable enough to follow the same path.

▶ Operator's Playbook

Before you green-light a humanoid pilot, ask the vendor to map each proposed task to a current safety standard and to hand over the risk assessment and declaration of conformity in writing. If the robot will share floor space with your staff, require the force and pressure limits from ISO/TS 15066 in that documentation, and model how many supervised machines one trained operator can realistically oversee before the economics work.

🤖 Your robotics thought for today:

A week of CEO announcements and funding rounds is a reminder that the hard part of robotics is rarely the robot itself. It is the patient work of teaching a machine to handle the messy, variable tasks people stopped noticing they do years ago. The companies that respect how hard that is tend to ship something that still works a year later.
